The Opera and Ballet Theatre named after A. A. Its history began a long time ago, in the distant 1932, when a decision was made to organize an opera and ballet theatre in Yerevan. The Council of People's Commissars of the Armenian SSR decided to create an impressive building for the opera theatre on the basis of the opera class of the Yerevan Conservatory. And already on January 20, 1933, the first premiere took place - the opera "Almast" by A. A. Spendiaryan, created on the libretto by S. Ya. Parnok.

The architectural miracle, built in 1940 according to the project of the famous architect Alexander Tamanyan, is located in the very center of Yerevan, as it was intended according to the general plan of the city. Previously, the Getseman Chapel, a small Armenian church built at the end of the 17th century, stood on this site.

The facade of the theater overlooks Freedom Square, where monuments to the great Armenian poets Hovhannes Tumanyan and Alexander Spendiaryan are erected. In 2010, a three-level parking lot for 500 cars was built under the square, providing theater guests with a convenient opportunity to leave their cars near the site.

Next to the theater building there is a beautiful park with cozy cafes. In the early 1960s, an artificial "Swan Lake" was created in the park, which resembles Lake Sevan in shape. A monument to the outstanding Armenian composer Arno Babajanyan was erected near the pond.
