The theater, founded in 1937, is famous for its repertoire, which includes both Russian classics and works of Armenian playwrights. Over the years, performances based on the works of such authors as Muratsan, A. Shirvanzade, G. Sundukyan and other classics of Armenian literature were staged on its stage. During Soviet times, the theater became famous thanks to the participation of outstanding actors and directors such as Armen Dzhigarkhanyan, Vera Babicheva and Gennady Korotkov.
The period when Alexander Samsonovich Grigoryan was the artistic director of the theater deserves special attention. Under his leadership, the theater staged works that became iconic for Soviet theatrical art, such as “The Wood Grouse’s Nest” and “The Wood Grouse’s Nest.” Viktor Rozov and "Duck Hunt" Alexandra Vampilova.
In the difficult 1990s, the theater continued to delight audiences with new productions, presenting its art not only in Armenia, but also abroad. In 2001, the theater was awarded the “Best Comedy” award. at the international theater festival "Belaya Vezha" in Brest, and in 2002 received the prize “For the highest atmospheric pressure” at the festival "Meetings in Russia" in St. Petersburg.
