Description
The Yerevan Artistic Theatre named after Mher Mkrtchyan is located in the central Kentron district of Yerevan, on Movses Khorenatsi Street. The theatre is named after its founder, People's Artist of the USSR Mher (Frunzik) Mkrtchyan, who devoted the last years of his life to the creation of this cultural institution. The theatre building was provided by a special decision of the government of the Armenian SSR and was previously a Trade House.
Initially, the theatre was named after Mkrtchyan's teacher, Vardan Adjemyan, but later received the name "Artistic", which symbolizes its mission - to provide opportunities for young actors deprived of the opportunity to work in other theatres. Under Mkrtchyan's direction, two plays were staged at the theater: "Kazar Goes to War" by J. Arutyunyan and "The Baker's Wife" by M. Pagnol.
After Mkrtchyan's death in 1993, the management of the theater passed to his widow Tamara Oganesyan. From 2000 to 2018, Albert Mushegovich Mkrtchyan served as artistic director. A memorial plaque with the profile of Frunzik Mkrtchyan was installed on the facade of the building, perpetuating his contribution.
